El Orfanato

Put Pan's Labyrinth, Final Destination, The Others, The Sixth Sense and Poltergeist in a blender and you're somewhere close to El Orfanato. In fact separating the film out from all those listed can be a bit tricky. Great atmosphere and acting, although, as with lots of films like this, it doesn't really add much to the creaking floorboard, things-going-bump-in-the night genre. Overrated then, but has the odd shocking moment and is competent enough. Also worth catching this version before some abysmal American remake appears in a year's time. Plus Fernando Cayo is kinda hot.

Sandra Bernhard kicks off this year’s Queer Up North festival with the only UK performance of her updated show, Without You I'm Nothing, at the Manchester Opera House on 9 May. Supported by Tina C, she’ll bring the house down with her trademark blend of caustic satire and rock’n’roll.
